Quotations and Words from the Wise
The following is a list of my favorite quotations and short poems that I have found inspiring. If I know the source I will add it but sometimes I don't.I hope you enjoy reading them and get some inspiration from them as well.
Desiderata is well-known and has a lot of words of wisdom some of which are as follows:
"Go placidly amid the noise and haste and always remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender,be on good terms with all persons.Speak your truth quietly and clearly and listen to others-even the dull and ignorant;they too have their story.Avoid loud and aggressive persons-they are vexations to the spirit.
You are a child of the universe,no less than the trees and the stars, you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you,no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should."
Next is a list of short sayings compiled for their wisdom and common sense.
"Do not follow where the path may lead.Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail." (Emerson)
"You cannot plough a field by turning it over in your mind"(Unknown)
"Men do less than they ought unless they do all that they can" (Thomas Carlyle)
"The wisdom of nations lies in their proverbs, which are brief and pithy." (William Penn)
"A wise man learns from the mistakes of others,a fool learns from his own"
"You will never "find" time for anything. If you want time you must make it." (Bruxton)
"To do two things at once is to do neither." (Syrus)
"Time and tide wait for no man." (Chaucer)
"Words without thoughts never to heaven go." (Shakespeare)
This is one that I remember from my schooldays:
"Always make the best of life, lose no happy day
Life will never bring you back chances swept away
Stay together with all your friends, love while life shall last
The mill will never grind again with waters that have passed"
This next one was chosen by us for our wedding service booklet:
"Don't walk behind......I may not lead
Don't walk ahead......I may not follow
Just walk beside me and be my friend."
Finally I will add the Serenity Prayer as it is a gem of wisdom in itself.
"God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change
Courage to change the things I can
And above all,the wisdom to know the difference"
I hope you enjoyed reading these. Please feel free to add any of your own favorites below as well as any other comments.
