Time is the great leveller. It is something everyone has in common whether they are rich or poor, young or old, busy or idle.

Another thing about time is that it is finite. We all have a certain amount of time which eventually runs out. This is all the more reason to make the most of the time we have on this earth instead of wasting it.

What is wasting time anyway? This can mean diferent things to different people. For example.some people think that the only productive use of time is to spend it working. This is a very admirable ethic but those that impose it on themselves often miss out on a lot. Perhaps wasting time is more about doing things without a positive mental attitude or without enthusiasm.

Perhaps the worst kind of wasting time is conflict and arguments that get nobody anywhere except to further a breakdown in communication that started the conflict in the first place .This type of interaction wastes energy as well as time.

It is better to take time to do things carefully to the best of our ability. This applies to building bridges and mending rifts in communication. There is a lot to be said for agreeing to differ because sometimes there is more than one viewpoint and we can take time to respect the other person's point of view and hope this is reciprocated by them.If it isn't reciprocated, it is still the right thing to do.This does not apply only to work.It applies to our social interactions and our relationships as well.We have to take time to talk to our spouse, children, other family members and friends. It is also important to take time to listen to them.We would all be better off taking time to focus on our relationships. It is from our relationships with others that we get more fulfilment in the long run than we do from our work if we take time to make time for this.

Making time is also about balancing our work and home lives. It often happens that we think we can't make time for the things we want to do whereas actually we have a choice:Instead of thinking that we don't have time,we can make time.

If we are busy with work commitments,it is important that we make time for other things. If we have a lot of free time,it is important that we use it well because it is our most precious gift and it does run out.It is important that we learn to understand that making time for things that we enjoy is not wasting time.Time can be well-spent in other ways than working. For example, one can have a creative hobby or do volunteer work.

Finally,a word about having time.Like taking time and making time, having time is about being available to others and doing things to fulfil our lives. On the other hand ,for the busy person who has a lot of people in their lives, having time might be spending time alone to balance things out.

We all have varying amounts of free time.We all have our own ideas about what wasting time is.Perhaps it is appropriate to summarise and conclude here with this simple quotation:

"What is life if full of care,we have no time to stand and stare"
